No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital initiatives.
